South Comoe & Agneby Tiassa region

PRESENTATION

Grand Bassam, chief town of this region is a famous tourist city covering the administrative districts of South Comoe, Agneby-Tiassa and Mé which highlights the rich historical heritage of the region and also represents the cradle of Cote d’Ivoire development. This heritage is symbolized by Quartier France, Assinie’s fort and the first primary school of ELIMA existing for 133 years. There are also the railroad of Rubino and the Abbey people revolt in 1910 in Agboville. It is important not to forget the French colonial vestiges on the Bandama River which is situated in TIASSALE. This geographical area has a multicoloured landscape composed of the rainforest in the cities of Agboville and Sikensi and the regions of Mé and South-Comoé, while the city of Tiassale is full of wooded Savannah. The region borders the lagoon and the sea on the coast offering wonderful beaches from Grand-Bassam to Assinie.

POPULATION
the Agni Sanwi, Aboure, Nzima kotoko, Attie, Mbatto, Abidji,  Abbey,  Krobou are peoples living in the South Comoe region. They all belong to the Akan ethnic group and live together in perfect harmony.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Quartier France District in Grand Bassam

This neighbourhood harbours several colonial architecture houses and functional houses with galleries, verandas and many gardens. The Quartier France of Grand-Bassam is a colonial urban model of the late nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth century.


The Costume museum

Built in 1893; it was firstly the governor's palace after being transformed in April 30th, 1981 by the eminent writer Bernard Dadie into a museum which houses a large collection of folks costumes from all parts of the country.

 

Statue of Liberty

In December 24th, 1949 women marched in direction of Grand Bassam passing through the bridge of victory to reach the civil prison a few meters east of the bridge, protesting against the unfair imprisonment of their husbands. For this act of valour, a monument has been dedicated to them.

Grand-Bassam beaches

Economical and administrative capital of Côte d'Ivoire once, the city of Grand Bassam was also the first seaside destination and the first port of Côte d'Ivoire. Its proximity with the Atlantic Ocean gives it a maritime coastline with magnificent beaches developed by private operators.


The King Kadjo Amangoua statue

Kadjo Amangoua, freedom fighter, died in deportation in 1909 in Ndjole, at 400 km in Gabon. He fought the French colonization for several years. 95 years later, a commemorative ceremony was held in Bonoua throughout the city in his tribute and a statue has been erected in his honor.

The seaside resorts of Assinie and Assouinde

Located 80 km east of Abidjan, the town of Assinie or Assinie-Mafia (as the Ivoirians call it) is a seaside resort on the Gulf of Guinea’s shore comprised in the department of Adiake in the South-Comoe region.

Accessible by road, the western side of Assinie is bordered by the ocean while its east side constituting a peninsula between ocean and lagoon where you can benefit luxurious villas and straw huts, about fifteen kilometers long, is accessible by boat (private boats or via canoes).

 

The zoological park Dipi of Assinie

This wildlife park devoted to crocodiles, snakes, giant turtles and other species was founded by Pierre Dupuy.
 

Aboisso

The Blehoue Aka plantations

Owned by a great farmer named Blehoue Aka, these large plantations of cocoa, oil palm and rubber trees covering nearly 2,000 ha are situated in Adaou, village located 8 km from Aboisso. This area is open to the public for discovery tours and open-air breakfasts.

The dams of Ayame 1 and 2

Built in 1959 the dams of Ayame 1 and 2 were the first hydroelectric dams in Côte d’Ivoire.

Adiake

The marine park of the Ehotile islands

The National Park of the Ehotile Islands covers an area of ​​550 ha and includes a set of 6 islands: Assokomonobaha (or Assoko), Balouate, Meha, Nyamouan.

Elouamin and the sacred island Bosson Assoun

The park has a diversified fauna and an exceptional avifauna like in all wetland areas. There are 128 species of birds divided into 35 types essentially aquatic, to which migratory species are added during dry season.

Adzope

The mountains of Becedi Brignan

The mountains "Mafa" according to the Akie people belief, takes the form of a male and female. These two granitic massifs are "mysteriously" situated in an area with non-mountainous relief in compact and damp vegetation. They are located 8 km south of Becedi-Brignan.

Tiassale

Archaeological park of Ahouakro

It’s an archaeological site located about 150 km from Abidjan. It has various forms of rocks and has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage informative list since 2006.
 

CULTURE

The Dipri

Traditional, religious, mystical and profane festival in Abidji culture, the Dipri is characterized by a state of trance which announces, prepares and shows great demonstrations merging with magic. It takes place every year in April in the south of Côte d’Ivoire.

The Abissa Festival

The Abissa gathers thousands of spectators and tourists each year, more precisely during the end of October. This popular festival held in Grand Bassam represents the cultural identity of the N'Zima people. Sons and daughters of the region divided into seven tribes of the N'Zima clan, gather during this festival to celebrate together.

The POPO Carnival of Bonoua

This annual cultural event held in Bonoua, city located 50 km east of Abidjan, finds its origins in the changes that youth of the locality brought to the annual festival of yams.

Thus, in 1946, they innovated by organizing the "Popo" which means "mask" in the Aboure dialect.

Much later, when they grew up, they gave the festival the name of "Popo Carnaval" adding a modern aspect which displays the carnival into a form of traditional parade.
