Bandama Valley Region

 

PRESENTATION

Bandama Valley region comprises the districts of Gbèkè and Hambol . This vast geographical area is rich in crafts, culture and infrastructures.

TOURIST SITES AND ATTRACTIONS

BOUAKE

Dar Es Salam dyers

Indigo loincloth dyeing experts

Tano Sakassou potters

Their cooperative exist since 1986 and produce utility items inspired by the Baoule tradition.

Benedictine monastery

Created in 1962 by  Europeans, it has  breezeblocks walls. It’s a place of meditation and spiritual retreat.

The wholesale market

It supplies the markets of the neighbouring countries (Mali, Burkina Faso) and consists of a financial institution and a customs post.

 

N'Zi river Lodge

Wildlife reserve about 8000 ha made up of several animal species (warthogs, buffalos, cobes, duikers), it is decorated by an artificial lake.

 

Trade fair carnival of Bouake

The first edition of the carnival trade fair of Bouake was launched in 1960. This cultural event, held in the city of  Bouake every year in the month of April includes a fair, a procession and at the end, the carnival statue incineration.

 

KATIOLA

The Mangoro Potters

It is an association of women trained in pottery ancestral art.

Ceramic center

Created in 1957 by the Frenchman Léon Guy Gonard, its vocation is to train young people in pottery modern techniques.

Clay extraction caves

More than 10 meters deep, the caves of clay mining around the town of Katiola are source of curiosity.

Mount Niangbo

Sacred Mountain, it overlooks the village of Niangbo and its surroundings.

 A botanical reserve around the mountain

 

CULTURE

The Queen Abla Pokou

She led the Baoulé people from Ghana to Côte d'Ivoire. The legend goes that she sacrificed her only son in the waters of Comoé to save her people.
