The Republic’s Coat of Arms

Cote d'Ivoire’s current Coat of Arms was adopted in 2011. The Africa’s savannah Elephant is the main symbol of the country; Indeed, it is the most common species that gave the country its name. The Elephant is also the official symbol of the African Democratic Rally, a party founded by the late Felix Houphouet-Boigny at the country’s independence.

 

Official decree of 1964

Decree No. 64-237 of 26 June 1964 amending Decree No. 60-78 of 8 February 1960 establishing the Republic’s Coat of Arms defines in this Article as follows: green escutcheon with an elephant head, the shield surmounted by a shining sun eclipsed with its nine gold pieces. Dexter and sinister two golden trees and silver inscription "Republic of Cote d’Ivoire" on golden listel ".

Therefore, this decree specifies that Cote d'Ivoire’s Coat of Arms contain six elements:

  • The elephant;
  • The golden rising sun;
  • The two golden palm trees;
  • The green escutcheon (it was color azure at the establishment of the coat of arms on February 8th, 1960).
  • The golden listel;
  • The silver inscription "Republic of Cote d'Ivoire".

The Republic’s Coat of Arms assumes:

  • A role of identification, as such, this symbol must be placed on the official documents in the middle or on the right side as stamp. It is the Republic’s seal;
  • A role of educationalist as call to union and solidarity facing any adversity. Historically, the designers of the coat of arms were inspired by the natural elements symbolizing the main opposing political parties during the colonization: The Elephant representing the PDCI and the palm representing the progressive party.
