The region of Gontougo

PRESENTATION
The regions of Gontougo and Bounkani are comprised in the district of Zanzan which is located in the east and north-east of Côte d’Ivoire. The Cantons of these regions are respectively the towns of Bondoukou and Bouna.

INFRASTRUCTURE
The Regional Hospital Center of BONDOUKOU

POPULATION
Abrons, Koulangos, Lobis and Malinkes are numerous in this region.

The Abron people came from Akwamu (a region in the south-east of Ghana, near the Volta River) and settled in the region of Bondoukou.

The Lobi people are found in West Africa and live in the south-west of Burkina Faso, in the north-west of Ghana and also in the north-east of Côte d’Ivoire, mostly in the region of Bouna which is close to both Ghana and Burkina Faso, on the right strand of the Black Volta.



TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Bondoukou
The 17th century mosque of Sorobango
Mosque with traditional architecture built in the 17th century.


The first hut of Bondoukou
The first house of Bondoukou with traditional architecture gave birth to the city of Bondoukou.

The House of Samory
African conqueror opposed to colonization, Samory TOURE was captured after long battles of resistance and deported to Gabon where he died. The remains of his house still stand in the city.

The Sacred Monkeys
The village Soko harbours monkeys who live harmoniously with villagers and they are banned from hunting.

The Museum of Bondoukou
Built in 1954 by the French commander, it was the market of the city before being transformed in 1980 into an Abron-Koulango museum of arts and traditions.

The Binger Hut
This hut has hosted the explorer Binger when he left Assinie on 04th December 1888 and was offered by a slave trader named Moustapha Ouattara.

The Motiamo Potters
This village is mainly composed of the Dega people whose life seems to be mixed with pottery.

Large weaving center that produces beautiful traditional loincloths

The Kroubi dance
Famous traditional dance of the region of Bondoukou and Bouna.

Bouna

Comoé National Park

Founded in 1968, the National Park of Comoe offers a vast field of landscapes, hills, ponds and valleys. It covers an area of ​​1,150,000 ha with 500km of trails. The Comoe River crosses the park in the western part for about 200km.
