The region of Tonkpi

PRESENTATION

The region of Tonkpi as well as Guemon’s are comprised in the Mountains District. The main cities of this district are Man, Danane, Duekoue, Guiglo, Biankouma, Bangolo and Toulepleu.

Located in the west of the country and bordering Guinea with Man as chief town is, the region of Tonkpi has two ecoregions: the Guinean mountain forest on the heights and the Sudanian savannah in the lowlands.

POPULATION

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the yacouba, guere, wobe and toura peoples settled massively in the mountainous region in the western part of Cote d'Ivoire. Even though the Yacouba people (south Mandé) represents 63% of the total population of the region the Kru people (we, guere and wobe) are the predominant population in Man.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Man

The Waterfalls
Waterfalls about 20 meters with a bridge of lianas can be discovered. It’s a wonderful place to rest.

Dent de Man
This magnificent mountain with an elevation of 881 m high offers a superb view over the whole city of Man.

Mount Tonkpi
It is the highest peak of the mountains in Man with an altitude of 1123 m.

Danane
In this town there are liana bridges in the villages of Lieupleu and Vatouo.

Biankouman
Typical traditional village of the habitat in Yacouba country

Mount Sangbe National Park
95,000 hectares of Cloud forest with 14 peaks over 1000 meters high.

Village of Gouessesso
Gouessesso is a place of mosaic culture which lets discover initiated hunters protected by special masks and accompanied by musicians.

Bangolo

Snake charmers
These men play with poisonous reptiles without running a risk

Duekoue

Children's Juggling
Grown men handle dangerously little initiates in a mystical acrobatic dance.

CULTURE
Siably Temate dance
A Dance marking the end of the rice harvest or rice festival.

Dance of the waders or Gouanzo or Gueblin
It is a balance dance executed by a mask during the festivals thus marking the end of the circumcision test.
